Darfur: how a young woman escaped the violence
Sousan (name changed) is one of the hundreds of thousands of people forced
to flee their homes by the violence plaguing Sudan’s Darfur region. She tells the ICRC’s
David Ito the story of how twice she fled to escape death.
Sousan, now in her late 20s, grew up in a farming family as one of 17 children in a village in South Darfur. She
married a local man, who took her to live in the nearby village of Esheraia.
By the middle of 2004, the conflict raging in Darfur was spreading towards the region where she lived. Alarmed by the reports of attacks and killings, she stopped going to work in the fields. In the grip of fear, the village prepared itself for the worst…(Help the ICRC) | 25-8-2005
