Uganda: twenty years of conflict
After two decades of fighting between the Ugandan authorities and the Lords Resistance Army there remains little sign of a peaceful solution. In response to the deteriorating humanitarian situation, the ICRC resumed its field activities in 2004, suspended three years earlier after the killing of six staff members in north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Villagers in Kitgum district. A fragile peace process aimed at ending the twenty year conflict between the Ugandan People's Defence Force (UPDF) and the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) broke down in 2005, leading to a resumption of violence in the north of the country. Civilians are the main victims of the conflict, with camps sheltering the displaced under constant threat of attack. UNICEF estimates that more than 20,000 children, mainly aged 10 to 15, have been abducted since the conflict broke out in 1987. Most of them remain missing.
