International Committee of the Red Cross
an independent, neutral organization ensuring humanitarian protection and assistance for victims of war and armed violence.
Myanmar: Red Cross Red Crescent response to Cyclone Nargis The Movement's response to the destruction wrought by Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar is being coordinated by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Visit the special section on the IFRC website. 9-5-2008 | Chad in crisis In Chad, sporadic clashes between armed opposition groups and the army continue following the failed offensive on the capital, N'djamena in early February. As bad as this may be, intercommunity clashes in the east have most impact on cilvilians - particularly in the region of Dar Sila and parts of northern Assoungha. 29-4-2008 | Yemen: ICRC activities September 2007 to March 2008 Many parts of Northern Yemen have not yet recovered from four years of conflict. More than 60'000 persons are still affected and enduring the consequences of the conflict. They are in critical need of humanitarian assistance. 8-5-2008 | Cluster munitions: Decades of failure, decades of civilian suffering A new information kit is now available highlighting the ICRC's call for a new treaty to outlaw inaccurate and unreliable cluster munitions. Containing up to 650 explosive sub-munitions, they scatter over a wide area and can kill and maim for years after a conflict. 11-4-2008 | Violence and the use of force The line separating disturbances and tensions from armed conflict can sometimes be blurred and the only way to categorize specific situations is by examining each individual case. This leaflet provides a summary of three different legal situations: armed conflict, situations other than armed conflict, and peace support operations. It also examines their definitions, the law applicable, practical implications and the role of the ICRC. 17-4-2008 | Cluster munitions conferences The ICRC is calling on States to urgently conclude a new treaty that will prohibit inaccurate and unreliable cluster munitions, require the elimination of current stocks, and provide for the clearance of unexploded cluster munitions and assistance to victims. 11-3-2008 |
